The upcoming Fehmarn Belt tunnel will tie Scandinavia and central Europe closer together. In the future, it will make high-speed rail travel from Stockholm to Hamburg and further out onto the European network possible for travelers from Sweden, Denmark and Germany.
The Fixed Link will decrease the current travel time between Copenhagen and Hamburg by two hours in 2024, making the overall travel time 2,5 hours.
The Fixed Link will also contribute to sustainable growth across borders, and result in more job opportunities and increased cooperation within fields such as science, tourism, education and culture; as well as contribute to the overall European integration in the northern parts of the EU.
The adoption of the construction law is a milestone in ensuring that the Fixed Link between Denmark and Germany becomes a reality.
- The approval of the construction act has brought us one step closer to realizing the massive growth- and development potentials that the Fehmarn belt tunnel and the entire STRING region, from Hamburg to the Southern parts of Sweden, holds. It will help create more employment opportunities, financial growth and improved welfare in the corridor between Hamburg and Copenhagen/the Öresund region - and we will utilize these potentials that the fixed link offers both Germany, Denmark and Sweden, says Henrik Apple, Chairman of STRING and member of City of Copenhagen Council.
The approval of the construction act means that Femern A/S and A/S Femern Landanlæg have been given the authority to construct and run the tunnel. This involves the construction of motorways, a double-tracked electrified railroad, an 18 kilometer long immersed tunnel with payment facilities on the Danish side, the expansion of railroad stretches on Zealand, and the establishment of a new bridge over Masnedsund and Guldborgsund.
The fixed Fehmarn belt link is expected be inaugurated in 2024 to coincide with the completion of the new double-tracked high-speed rail between Lübeck to the tunnel in Puttgarden.
