Meet our members: The City of Gothenburg
In the secretariat we would like to reintroduce and highlight STRING regions and cities, to showcase their individual strenghts and political priorities – each important in their own regard, but ultimately stronger together.
The city of Gothenburg is located on the shorelines of western Sweden, and is home to the largest port in Scandinavia. Acting as key access point to the northern European market, and strategically situated between the capitals of Norway and Denmark, its boasts impressive economic statistics: A fast growing population, low unemployment and a thriving business climate. In fact, over the course of the last 10 years, the city has seen 28.000 new businesses materialize in the city, and every third krona invested into R&D by Swedish business, is spent in the Gothenburg region.
As a paragon of innovation, with a broad focus on sustainability, the city of Gothenburg is an important member of the STRING megaregion. In continuously voicing their support, for the work of STRING to expand the Oslo-Gothenburg railway to double-tracks, the city of Gothenburg has cemented itself as a proactive and ambitious member of STRING, with a strong ambition to develop new opportunities of co-operation.
Another important goal for the city of Gothenburg is their ambition to have a fossil free economy in 2030, and they are actively working on the electrification of the City, utilizing, among other things, hydrogen technology in their port facilities. With the establishment of a Northvolt and Volvo research facilities focusing on the development of battery technology and autonomous vehicles, the city of Gothenburg is looking to the future and focusing on green growth.
These are also priorities for their political representatives to STRING, Deputy Mayor Karin Pleijel (MP) and Mayor Axel Josefson (M), who are driving efforts to become a European leader in terms of electrification of the city. For the last couple of years, they have been part of a strong political commitment in Gothenburg to support green transition and the development of green tech companies.
