The construction of the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link starts in January 2021

A broad parliamentary majority has decided to start the construction of the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link on the Danish side. “This decision sends a strong signal underlining the importance of developing modern and green infrastructure in our region and in the entire EU to speed the economy recovery in a post-pandemic world,” says Thomas Becker, Managing Director, STRING.

The construction works will be ready to continue on the German side by mid 2022. The project has been underway for years and has met resistance and legal complaints for just as long.

In February 2019, Femern A/S received the signed approval from the Schleswig-Holstein authorities. The German Federal Administrative Court is currently processing the complaints about the approval. Final hearings and verdict are dated in autumn 2020.

“We are very happy that the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link project has taken another important step toward its realization. Once the tunnel and the hinterland connections on rails and highways are in use, following the updated planning in mid 2029, one of the largest bottlenecks in the European TEN-T infrastructure net is eliminated,” says Managing Director Thomas Becker from STRING.

“Today’s political decision is a great step in the fight against the economic consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. In a post pandemic situation, this decision sends a strong positive signal underlining the importance of developing a modern, sustainable and green infrastructure in our region and in the entire EU to speed the economy recovery. The realization of the fixed link means also a lot for STRING’s further development of our Green Hub megaregion,” underlines  Becker.
